Chapter Seven

Earth Day

Spotlights swept across the stage as the audience poured into the auditorium. Team Force stood behind the podium, ready for anything. How could our team be so confident, especially after the crappy training sessions with Schwartz? Could she secretly be working for Palmer?

The crowd roared as Mr. Tribble walked onto the stage, but my attention focused on the creep standing next to me. Betrayal seeped out of his skin. How could Blaine deceive us like that? What had Palmer promised him to make it worth screwing over his teammates? Questions kept stacking up. When would the answers come?

I nudged Celery. “I think we need to shut Skater Boy down.”

“No kidding. Let’s make him wish he never died.”

I gave her a wink. “By the time we’re done with him, he’ll be where he belongs.”

“Hell.”

“Fingers crossed.”

Blaine poked me in the waist. “What are you dudes whispering about? Better be planning our strategy.”

I stuck my nose in his face. “Back off, dude.” I shoved him aside and turned back to Celery. “I talked to Ryan, and he’s willing to help. He’s going to keep Blaine from sabotaging us.”

“Great. Then all we have to do is win.”

It sounded so easy, but Mr. Tribble hadn’t even announced the challenge yet. He raised his hands in the air and motioned for the audience to quiet down. All our fans were seated front and center, waving their Go Celery & Taylor! and Girl Power! signs. Schwartz sat in the front row, right next to the other trainer. Thankfully she didn’t have a dreaded scum sign. Instead, she wore a day-glow orange “Go Team Galaxy” T-shirt.

They settled down as Mr. Tribble took center stage. “I know you’re eager to hear who is ahead in the Fan Favorite completion. It’s a tie between Spencer, captain of Team Force, and Celery of Team Galaxy. Give them a hand.”

The crowd applauded and chanted Spencer and Celery until the names sounded like one word. Celery positively glowed.

I gave her hand a squeeze. “I hope you win.”

Tribble tapped on his microphone. “This round the teams will be challenged like never before. The final contest is going to take place on Earth!”

The crowd roared and waved their signs back and forth. Did I hear him right? Could the thing I longed for the most actually be happening—now? Blaine and Ryan gave each other high- fives. Their rivalry forgotten in a moment.

Celery jumped up and down. “Woo Hoo. We’re going back to Earth!

I gave her a weak smile. “I d love to believe it’s true, but I have a feeling in my gut it’s just another hologram.”

“No way. This is awesome!” Celery ran her finger down one of the rings on her costume. “I can’t wait to put this thing through its paces.”

Prickles formed on my arms as Mr. Tribble turned toward a giant screen that materialized on the back wall.

A collective gasp let out as the new scavenger hunt list appeared.
